Hooping
About the Instructor
Born and raised in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, 23 year-old HoopDance Instructor Hanna Kokovai journeyed to the west coast in search of a passion and happiness that she says has been fulfilled in many ways by hooping. Hanna discovered hooping in 2008 after attending the Burning Man festival where she was mesmerized by performers playing with fire. After mastering the arts of fire fans and poi, she became enamored with the way that this heavy ring of plastic and colored tape transformed her body and mind. She began designing and selling her own hoops, and in no time began sharing what she knew with others. "Hooping is playful, and also very powerful," she says. "When I am dancing with my hoop, I am free." Hanna's background in dance, gymnastics and yoga combined with her high energy, creative ability and thirst for pure fun give her the tools to practice and teach HoopDance with unique flair.
HoopDance
The hula hoop has come quite a long way since it's days as nothing more than a flimsy plastic children's toy. The modern version of the activity, called "Hooping" has exploded into the dance, art and exercise world with full force. Hooping is an activity that every age group can enjoy, says HoopDance teacher Hanna Kokovai. What most people don't know about hooping is how diverse the possibilities are when you play with a hoop.
HoopDance class will expose you to a type of exercise that you've never known possible. Explore your emotions as they are brought out through hooping. You will sweat, shape up and smile, all with the help of a colorful plastic ring and your own undiscovered hooping talents. This class will get your heart pumping pure love to all parts of your body as you learn tricks that not only tone and tighten every muscle, but also look fabulous. You will develop strength and endurance as you transform and perform. "Who knew a hoop could be so versatile? I hoop with every part of my body-my arms, neck, chest, core, butt, and knees. Sometimes I hoop slowly, really finding my center, sometimes fast and wildly-the possibilities are endless," Hanna says.
During class, Hanna will guide you through a warm-up, instruct you in learning amazing hoop tricks, lead group exercises, teach you to become one with your hoop and give you time for a "hoopjam" session where you will be able to practice and dance freely to powerful and fun music.
The small class sizes will allow the instructor to give one-on-one attention to all students, guiding you through moves at your own pace, while also challenging you to push to your personal limit. Each class is different, so you'll always be discovering something new about hooping and about yourself. Hooping is, most importantly, fun, so come ready to laugh and play.
Specialized hoops will be provided for you, so all you'll need is a water bottle, clothes that make you feel comfortable and allow you to move freely with your hoop, and an open mind. Classes are designed for all levels of hooping. Whether you are a beginner (you probably won't be alone!) or a veteran hooper, you'll undoubtedly learn something new and leave the studio feeling wonderful.
Happy Hooping!
